ANANIA NGOLIGA AND JOHN KITIME A SHORT CV

Anania Ngoliga and John Kitime  have been friends and musicians in the Tanzania music scene for years. Anania who lost his sight through an unknown disease at a very age managed to become one of the top musicians in the country struggling from learning to play the kalimba  and later other instruments at Buigiri School for the Blind. After completing school he moved to Dar es Salaam and through friends joined his first band The Jambos. One day while the band was rehearsing, the late Lovy Longomba happened to pass by and after hearing Anania sing, immediately asked Anania to join his band Afriso Ngoma, this was like a dream come true joining a ‘real’ band just months after finishing school.  Anania then later moved to Legho Stars where he began playing the guitar and the keyboards in earnest, even recording some songs with both instruments. After that he moved from one band to another,he is now the band leader of The Karafuu Band. John Kitime began playing guitar at home, his grandfather was a teacher, and so was his grandmother, his father and also his mother, and so he also was expected to be a teacher and he was a teacher for several years between 1973 to 1978. All the while he was a member of a number of small bands. In 1983 he joined Orchestra Mambo Bado which was headed by  Tchimanga Assossa, and the moved to  Orchestra Makassy, TX Seleleka, Tancut Almasi Orchestra, Vijana Jazz , Magoma Moto Sound  and finally the Kilimanjaro Band. But the common thing between Anania and John is their love for traditional music, and they have since created a duo, with Anania playing the Kalimba and John playing the acoustic guitar in the finger picking style he learned from his father. The two have made numerous shows which include two month long tours in the USA in 2009 and 2010, the tours came about after an electrifying musical meet between Anania and Bela Fleck the great Banjo player from the US.  A short performing trip in India are some of the highlights of the duo.
